As we approach that daunting April 15 deadline, also known as Tax Day, I can’t help but feel the familiar mix of stress and anticipation that comes with filing taxes. For me, tax season is a time to gather all my documents, review my finances, and ensure that everything is in order and accurate before filing. I’ve found that careful organization, preparing ahead of time, and staying informed can minimize my stress level during this time of year. Here are some tips to help you prepare your taxes and minimize your stress:

  1. Organizing your documents can simplify the process. Start by gathering all your tax-related documents, including W-2s, 1099s, K-1’s, and any other documents. Throughout the year, I create a folder to keep all these documents together so they can be easily accessed when it comes time to file my taxes.
  2. Reviewing your information is important to ensure accuracy and avoid potential issues with your return. Double check all information including SSNs, birthdates, and bank account information. Chances are you know all your information, but you might have made an error when entering a dependent’s or spouse’s information. Additionally, if you plan to claim any credits or deductions, make sure you have the appropriate documentation.
  3. Consider using a tax preparation tool. Personally, I am a big fan of tax preparation tools. Not only do they streamline the filing process, but they help you identify deductions, credits you may qualify for, and ensure you get the maximum possible refund. By using a preparation tool effectively, you can ultimately have a less stressful tax experience.
  4. File away! You can file electronically using tax software or through the IRS’s e-file system. If you prefer to file by mail, make sure to include all forms. Filing your taxes on time can help you avoid penalties and speed up the return process.
  5. Planning for next year’s taxes throughout the year will pay off when it comes time to file your 2024 tax return. Consider tracking your expenses, charitable donations, medical expenses, and business expenses throughout the year. Stay informed about the ever-changing tax laws and deadlines.
