Nothing shapes your experience working with RMB more than the people who make our work possible every day. The Meet RMB series offers a chance to get to know our team a little better.
RMB: Can you give us an overview of your role at RMB?
Patrick Thiel: I’m a fixed income analyst and trader, which means I focus on data analytics, research, and trade execution for RMB's Core Fixed Income assets. I spend a lot of time developing and maintaining broker relationships and keeping up with the latest economic trends/data. I also work closely with our Portfolio Managers on security selection and overall portfolio structure. It’s beneficial to have a diverse collection of thoughts and ideas, and it’s one of my favorite parts of the job.
RMB: What does a typical workday look like in your role?
PT: My workday starts around 7 am when I get to the office. As a team, we read the news and observe market movements, bounce ideas off one another, and discuss our game plan on which strategies to trade that day. Most days consist of trading, data consolidation, monitoring and reviewing accounts, and drafting reports for clients and/or prospects. Around 2 pm, when the trading desk begins to slow, we reflect on what has happened in the market, prepare for the following day, and assess what needs to be done for our clients.
RMB: Tell us about the education and career path that brought you here.
PT: I graduated from high school in 2015 and initially attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where I was studying to become a packaging engineer. After deciding business was better suited for me, I transferred to Marquette University to study finance and investment management. While at Marquette, I worked at Piper Sandler as a fixed income sales and trading intern on their MBS desk. Upon graduation, I went to work for a client in Minneapolis for a year before returning to Wisconsin and working for a smaller RIA as a Wealth Management Associate. It didn’t take long to realize I missed my Bloomberg Terminal and the intricacies of bond trading. I’ve been with RMB just under 2 years.
RMB: What keeps you busy outside of work?
PT: Well, I got engaged in February 2023 and my fiancé and I recently bought a house, so our days are filled with wedding planning and home improvement projects. We also adopted a yellow lab puppy named Mae, so we enjoy playing with her and taking her on hikes through the thousands of acres of local state forests. I’m also a bit of an adrenaline junkie and love dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and anything else with a gearbox and wheels.
RMB: Is there something that you’re especially passionate about in life?
PT: Outside of work, I’m passionate about hunting! Although I’m not a huge gun hunter, I love archery. Hunting is peaceful and gives me a break from reality. It is quite challenging and requires a multitude of skills and patience.
RMB: What makes you most proud to work at RMB?
PT: The culture! RMB is a large company, but it feels small and close-knit. Everyone is personable and cares deeply for one another. The sophistication of the work we do humbles me every day and it blows me away the knowledge we can consume here. I've become very close with my immediate teammates and I thoroughly enjoy every day I’m in the office.
