RMB: Can you give us an overview of your role at RMB?
Charlie Henness Jr.: I’m a portfolio manager and senior equity analyst. I work with our asset management team and equities group and focus on the financial services and real estate sectors. I do fundamental research on companies, and I collaborate with the investment team on company analysis and on execution priorities. I’m also involved in our intern and asset allocation committees.
RMB: What does a typical workday look like in your role?
CH: I start my day by checking the news that may impact the market or companies that we have interest in. During earnings season, my days are filled with reviewing company results, conference calls, collaborating with other research teammates, and prioritizing research to perform after earnings season. Outside of earnings season, I lead company management calls, meet management teams, and do deep research on companies RMB already owns in our strategies or on companies that we’re potentially interested in owning.
RMB: Tell us about the education and career path that brought you here.
CH: I studied accounting at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I was an active member of Beta Theta Pi and Spanish Club, and I had the opportunity to study abroad in Granada, Spain. After graduation, I started at Zurich Scudder Investments in accounting. I went on to work at IronBridge Capital Management as an equity analyst and eventually as a Portfolio Manager until they were acquired by RMB.
RMB: What keeps you busy outside of work?
CH: My family! I have a wife and two boys, ages 12 and 10. Our kids are very active playing football, baseball, and other sports. When I’m not watching their games or playing baseball with them, I spend my free time reading and doing yard work. My favorite topics to read about are history, economic history, biographies, and investment related. As for traveling, we try to go skiing every year, and it’s probably our favorite vacation as a family.
RMB: Is there something that you’re especially passionate about in life?
CH: I’m passionate about learning and bettering myself through reading, thinking, and doing.
RMB: What makes you most proud to work at RMB?
CH: I’m most proud to work at RMB because of the people. I think RMB is filled with talented people, but also people of high character. Everyone is passionate about what we’re doing at RMB, trustworthy, and friendly.
