At Curi Capital, it’s our mission to help clients build true wealth, however they define it. Our team brings the knowledge, experience, and passion to help clients meet their goals through a wide range of financial services and solutions—and we’d love for you to meet them.
Each month, we will engage a different member of the Curi Capital team to learn more about their experiences, their insights, and their perspectives, while providing an opportunity for you to get to know them on a more personal level.
This month, we sat down with Caleb Sanderson, Manager of Retirement Plan Solutions for the firm, to discuss his experience watching the firm grow and strengthen, how his passion for helping people led him to his career, and where he finds joy outside of work.
COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE WITH CURI CAPITAL AND WHAT YOUR EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN LIKE SO FAR?
I was brought on a few years ago before the firm launched to help build the back office and the service foundation for our retirement plan solutions team. My role has adapted to focus on internal relationship management for our RPS clients, entailing anything from fund changes, working with record keeper partners, to leading our financial wellness initiative.
As a part of the financial wellness initiative, I create participant education decks, including employee education sections on our plans. Wearing multiple hats is enjoyable because it makes every day different.
WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CAREER?
When asked as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said everything from a doctor, lawyer, musician, among others. Starting college at North Carolina State University, I didn’t know what I wanted to “be,” but I knew what I wanted to do, which was help people. Fast forward a few years, I grabbed coffee with a mentor who was a financial advisor, and he explained that, at its core, financial planning is about helping clients meet the goals they’re working towards. That conversation lit a spark, and I decided to pursue this profession.
WHAT SETS CURI CAPITAL APART FROM OTHER FIRMS?
Each person on our team was sought out for a specific skill to fill a specific need, and we’ve selected the best person to do it. Our specialized team approach, combined with the backing of Curi, has allowed us to become a premier, full-service financial advisory firm. Many financial advisory firms only take private wealth clients or focus solely on private investments, retirement plan solutions, or financial planning. At Curi Capital, we provide all of the above for our clients, setting us apart from the crowd.
WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FIRM?
I want our firm’s premier services to be known—and to become an industry standard for the best of everything in-house, without being a catch-all. I’m also personally passionate about the work I do with our plan participants and want to see all our participants feel comfortable as they approach retirement. Many financial advisors focus on high-net worth individuals, oftentimes leaving others out. In a retirement plan, I get to work with all kinds of clients on an individual and strategic basis—giving them a level of service they won’t get elsewhere.
WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES IN YOUR CAREER THUS FAR? HOW HAS IT SHAPED YOU AS A PROFESSIONAL?
Joining Curi Capital and being one of six on the founding team taught me that everyone must do the grunt work and not just the glamourous work to see success in the early stages. That sense of collaboration has been instilled in me and in our company culture from the start. We are moving quickly, but we are moving together, so it’s always strategic and comes from a place of strength.
WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE? HOW DID IT SHAPE YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL?
There have been many small moments that have shaped my life and helped me improve as a person. One big experience that stands out was studying abroad for a year while in college in Leeds, England. I’ve lived in the Raleigh area for most of my life, so it was wonderful to have a change in environment. Learning to live in a different country in my young adult life taught me how to work with differing perspectives and personalities, all while taking in a new culture.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR INTERESTS OR HOBBIES?
I enjoy staying active in the community, whether that be working out and playing sports with friends or attending local food festivals and concerts. I’m also a co-chair for Curi’s volunteer and community service employee resource group—most recently coordinating a volunteer day for the North Carolina food bank and a blood drive.
