At Curi Capital, it’s our mission to help clients build true wealth, however they define it. Our team brings the knowledge, experience, and passion to help clients meet their goals through a wide range of financial services and solutions—and we’d love for you to meet them.

This month, we sat down with Sheldon Fox, Senior Director of Family Office Services, to discuss his transition to the Curi Capital team following the KDI acquisition, the evolution of his career, and where he finds joy outside of work.

COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE WITH CURI CAPITAL AND WHAT YOUR EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN LIKE SO FAR?

I joined Curi Capital following the acquisition of KDI at the end of 2021, with a focus on expanding services to our ultra-high net worth clients. We aim to reach beyond investments and basic financial planning, to provide services in more complex areas like estate planning and philanthropy.

Last month, I took over leadership of our team of wealth advisors, financial planners, and retirement plan specialists.

WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CAREER?

I started out my career in accounting, which I studied as an undergraduate at Duke University. I later went on to earn my CPA certificate in 1984. Throughout my career and the different organizations, I have worked with, I have had the opportunity to build upon my accounting skills as a foundation while branching out into many other areas of the financial services industry.

WHAT DID YOU DO IN YOUR CAREER BEFORE JOINING CURI CAPITAL?

After spending 16 years in public accounting and being admitted as a partner at KPMG LLP, I had the opportunity to become Chief Financial Officer for a publicly traded bank holding company. This was my first chance to significantly expand my financial skills.

After the bank was acquired for a second time, I joined what became KDI Capital in 2004, where I remained for over 17 years. At KDI I focused on investment management for the first 15 years in various roles, before launching KDI’s efforts in financial planning in 2019.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FIRM?

My vision for Curi Capital is to continue providing exemplary service to our clients, experience significant growth in size, be an effective competitor with the biggest national players in wealth management and retirement plan solutions and earn a reputation as the leading advisor to physicians and their practices.

WHAT SETS CURI CAPITAL APART FROM OTHER FIRMS?

I think our ownership by a mutual holding company is a huge, unique advantage that we have as it lets us execute a long-term business plan, without the short-term mindset that can hold back publicly traded and private equity owned firms. Also, our relative youth as a firm founded three years ago has allowed us to be nimble in our strategic plans and very competitive with our technology solutions.

WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES IN YOUR CAREER THUS FAR?

One of the most memorable experiences in my career was in 2001 with the bank I worked for. We moved from NASDAQ to the New York Stock Exchange and the management team got to ring the opening bell at the NYSE. My wife and oldest son, who was 13 at the time, joined us on the trip and during breakfast in the NYSE dining room, my son had the chef prepare pancakes to his specifications.

WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?

In November of 2012, I left a non-profit board meeting early to fly to DC and made it just in time for the birth of my first grandson. I stole one of my best friend’s grandpa names and have been known as “Bubba” ever since, with three special grandsons and my first granddaughter on the way.

WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT IN YOUR LIFE ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

With a lot of credit to my wife, Debbie, I am proud that my two sons, Bryan and Matt, have become financially independent adults, started their own families, and consistently demonstrate very strong values.
